The show is available subtitled for free with commercial interruption on Hulu and Funimation’s website so you can be watching it right now! If you watch it dubbed, you may notice a lot of awkward sounding dialogue, but remember this was an early dub. It all looks really cool and very effectively straddles the line between realism and science fiction. There are a lot of over-modified super computers with holographic displays and jury-rigged liquid cooling systems. Much of the technology is more fantasy than reality, anyways.

Serial Experiments Lain is more about the impact of technology on society than it is about the technology itself.

You do not need to know much about computers to enjoy this show. Meanwhile, the rapidly spreading information and unforgiving users show how dangerous the Wired can be.

The constant hum of the electrical wires and the strange shadows gives you the feeling that the ordinary world outside is more ominous than the world of the Wired. The cyberpunk motifs are blended well with the ordinary modern day setting. The show really gets across at how the Internet can both connect and isolate people. Well before the phrase “social networking” was commonly used, this show was exploring the connections created between people through the ever-growing communications technology. Though the show was created in the late 90s, Serial Experiments Lain discusses things that seem more relevant today. A few details, however, may be left open for interpretation. Rest assured that the second episode tones down the weirdness and that by the end of the show all of the important questions will be answered. The opening episode will throw so much weird imagery at you that you’ll either be drawn in by the mystery or you’ll turn it off immediately with the fear that none of your questions will be answered. I also love the head trip the show sends you on. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on what’s going on, a new mystery will pop up that will make you question everything you know so far. I love this show for it’s exploration of technology, the Internet, and the impact of those things on society. Serial Experiments Lain is a cyberpunk thriller that will have you questioning reality. Just who is Lain? Who are the mysterious order of hackers calling themselves “the Knights?” Is there really a god of the Wired like Chisa said? As Lain struggles to understand what’s going on she learns more about the true nature of the Wired and more about herself, as well. Chisa explains that she decided to give up her body to live in the Wired because “here, there is a god.” Are the emails true, or is it just a prank?įollowing these events Lain starts to experience strange visions, and people claim to see her in places she’s never been. In her emails, Chisa explains that she is not dead and that she lives on in “the Wired,” this show’s version of the Internet. However, everyone in the class is still receiving email from her. Sadly, one of her classmates, Chisa, has recently committed suicide. Lain seems like a fairly ordinary high school girl, though she is unusually shy. If you’re a fan of computers or the Internet, then you should be watching Serial Experiments Lain. This is an older anime that was first released in 1998, and it’s still my favorite anime about computers and technology. It’s really more of a sci-fi show than it is a horror show, but it has a very spooky atmosphere that will keep you wondering what will happen next. In closing one world and opening another, only Lain will realize the significance of their presence.Today’s review may be a bit of a stretch for the horror theme we have going this month.

Konaka, whose other works include Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological avant-garde mystery series that follows Lain as she makes crucial choices that will affect both the real world and the Wired. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda-the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide.
